The #DerbyMilano is one of the most famous cross-city clashes in the world. Winning it brings great joy. All #DerbyMilano games are full of tension and emotions, some leave an indelible mark. The ones we most like to remember are those we won, irrespective of whether we dominated or had to dig in. Often it was a mix of both.

It’s now time to relive the ten most recent Nerazzurri wins in Milan vs. Inter in the league, starting from the last game played between the sides: a 3-2 win on 17 March 2019. Vecino made the most out of Lautaro Martinez’s headed assist to open the scoring. The second goal came through Stefan De Vrij, who planted a header into the back of the net following a perfect cross from Matteo Politano. Lautaro bagged the Nerazzurri’s third in his first #DerbyMilano, meaning goals from Bakayoko and Musacchio were ultimately meaningless. One moment that won’t be forgotten in a hurry is Danilo D’Ambrosio’s extraordinary block on the line when it looked certain that Milan would level things up.

In 2012, we won both Milan vs. Inter fixtures. The game on 15 January was decided by Diego Milito, who beat Abbiati with a left-footed strike. This carried on the tradition which saw Milan as one of his favourite victims (six goals for the Nerazzurri and two while at Genoa). A fantastic Walter Samuel header four minutes in following a misjudgement by Rossoneri goalkeeper Abbiati was the difference in the #DerbyMilano played on 7 October.

The most resounding victory in the last ten Milan vs. Inter showdowns where the Nerazzurri emerged victorious was the 4-0 thrashing on 29 August 2009. It was the game which was a sign of things to come as José Mourinho’s men went on to win the Scudetto, Coppa Italia and Champions League, a unique treble. Inter broke the deadlock through new signing Thiago Motta, who scored his first goal on his #DerbyMilano debut. Diego Milito then doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Samuel Eto’o had been brought down in the box by Gattuso. Maicon finished off Milito’s assist (the Argentine scored once and set up two goals that game) to grab the Nerazzurri’s third at the end of the first half. Any remaining doubts about the result vanished when Dejan Stankovic struck with a trademark long-range effort with his right foot. A 4-0 win and the beginning of a magnificent season.

One of the most hard-fought matches between the cross-town rivals came on 28 October 2006, when Inter won 4-3 despite being down to ten men following Materazzi’s sending off. The Nerazzurri got off to a flying start through Hernan Crespo, who headed home Stankovic’s free kick. The latter then got on the scoresheet himself from the edge of the box. At the start of the second half, Zlatan Ibrahimovic bagged his first goal in the #DerbyMilano, with the Swedish striker getting the better of Rossoneri defender Nesta before firing past Dida on the volley. Clarence Seedorf then scored via a Materazzi deflection which made it impossible for Julio Cesar to reach the ball. But the same Marco Materazzi then restored Inter’s three-goal advantage, finishing off a cross whipped in from the right. Having scored his first goal against the Rossoneri, Marco lifted up his shirt to display a birthday message for his son. He was subsequently given a second yellow card and ordered to leave the pitch. With the Nerazzurri down to ten men, Milan believed they could get back into it: Gilardino reduced the arrears before Kakà made it 4-3 with 94 minutes on the clock. Nevertheless, Inter held on to secure the victory.

On 3 March 2002, Christian Vieri was the key man in the #DerbyMilano as he bundled the ball into the back of the net with his knee. This was his first league goal against the Rossoneri and Hector Cùper’s first win in a Derby as Inter’s boss.

In March 2000, Ivan Zamorano played a key role in deciding the contest as he got on the scoresheet and also set up Luigi Di Biagio for Inter’s second. The striker, wearing his famous 1+8 shirt, netted after Abbiati had presented the ball to the Nerazzurri with a poor clearance. Inter’s second goal was a thing of beauty: Zamorando laid the ball off and the Italian midfielder finished with aplomb to make it 2-0. Andriy Shevchenko’s goal in the last minute ultimately proved to be a consolation.

In 1998, Inter ran out 3-0 winners in what was another fantastic victory. A brace from ‘Cholo’ Simeone and a lovely lob from the “Phenomenon” Ronaldo meant the Nerazzurri took home the spoils. The first goal came about thanks to Djorkaeff’s pinpoint corner, with Simeone decisively nodding the ball home. Ronaldo then doubled Inter’s advantage with a perfectly placed lobbed finish following Moriero’s through ball. It remains one of the best #DerbyMilano goals scored to date. ‘Cholo’ then put the game to bed once and for all after running from his own half and rounding goalkeeper Sebastiano Rossi.

On 10 March 1996, Marco Branca was the match-winner for the Nerazzurri in the #DerbyMilano. His fifth-minute goal was enough to hand Roy Hodgson’s team the win against Fabio Capello’s side. Branca finished the season as Inter’s top scorer with 17 goals.

The final #DerbyMilano that we’re looking back on is the 1-0 win for Inter in 1990. It was a real tactical battle as coaches Trapattoni and Sacchi looked to get the better of each other. In the end, Nocola Berti scored the decisive goal with 85 minutes on the clock with a header following Jürgen Klinsmann’s ball from the right.
